Rebar Rules Service
for Revit and ACC
A context-aware rules engine for reinforcement in Revit, running locally and headless on Autodesk Platform Services, with violations surfaced as Autodesk Construction Cloud issues instead of static reports.
What it does
This service validates and places reinforcement based on explicit rule sets (cover, spacing, bar types, hooks, openings) in Revit models. The dry-run mode reports rule violations without modifying the geometry, while the execute mode places reinforcement according to validated rules. The service is designed for common building hosts like walls, columns, floors, slabs, and beams, and can be easily extended with custom logic to support civil infrastructure hosts in the future.
How it runs
The same rules engine runs inside Revit and on APS Design Automation for Revit. Models are taken from ACC, checked headless, and violations are pushed back as ACC Issues grouped by host and rule type. Once validated, the engine can place reinforcement directly into the Revit model, and the updated model can be pushed to ACC or returned to the user. Additionally, rule validation and rebar placement can be triggered by updates to the model in ACC, ensuring a continuous feedback loop.
Role of AI
A dedicated rule-authoring service uses LLMs under the hood to propose rule definitions from codes and reference projects. Engineers review, correct, and approve these rules in a controlled workflow. Geometry is always created by deterministic rules, with a clear separation between intent, feasibility checks (dry runs), and execution.
Currently in active development with pilot availability planned. Ideal for large structural and infra projects that rely on Revit and ACC and want consistent, auditable rebar rules at scale.
